Are schools responsible for everything?

A parent walks into my office one evening, visibly concerned. She shares that her child doesn't respond to guests who visit their home, and she worries about respect for elders. As we talk, the conversation turns to the school—and whether we are somehow failing her child.
I listened, and I assured her: we will work on this together. Because that's the truth of it—raising a child has never been a one-person job. The old saying, "It takes a whole village to raise a child," has never been more relevant than it is today.
Parenting in the modern world is harder than it has ever been. Parents give their children everything—often before they even ask. Screens and devices have opened windows to the world that no generation before us had to navigate. And when a child's behaviour doesn't match a family's hopes, it's natural to look for someone to point at. Too often, that finger turns toward the school.
But here's the thing we sometimes forget: schools and parents are not on opposite sides. We are on the same team, working toward the same goal—raising kind, responsible, thoughtful young people.
Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work. Yes, there are moments when parents feel stretched thin. Busy schedules, demanding homes, and the pressure of daily life can make it hard to find time. But when we pause and remember why we're here, the picture changes. The most inspiring moments in my work come from families who choose to walk the journey with us—parents who stay involved, who see their children grow, and who proudly share that credit with the school. That partnership is where the magic happens.
Parenting, like childhood, is a learning journey. Just as children need guidance from elders, today's parents need guidance and support too. The world has changed—media, society, and technology have reshaped how we raise our kids—and none of us were handed a manual for it. That's okay. There is help everywhere: counsellors, experienced educators, and school communities are ready to walk beside every family.

So let me offer this gentle invitation to every parent: entrust your child to the school, and let the school lean on you. Take a moment to connect with the teaching community—especially our experienced faculty, who have guided countless families through exactly these moments. Reach out to counsellors, who are among our greatest resources for shaping children into responsible, resilient adults.
As David Bly has rightly quoted- “Your children will become what you are; so be what you want them to become." And perhaps most importantly—remember that you are your child's first hero. Little eyes are always watching. The kindness, patience, and values you demonstrate become the blueprint for the person they will become.
When we raise children to be open-minded, responsible, caring thinkers, we do more than help one family. We help the world move forward—one child, one family, one partnership at a time.
